FAQs

What is the purpose of this project?

The Nimitz & Rosecrans Roadway Improvement Project is the final off-site traffic mitigation project required by the City of San Diego as part of the development of Liberty Station. It will reconfigure the traffic lanes on Rosecrans Street on either side of Nimitz Boulevard. Dual left turn lanes will be installed on Rosecrans to Nimitz (both eastbound and westbound), and a dedicated right turn lane will be added on southbound Rosecrans to westbound Nimitz. In addition, the project will construct dedicated bike lanes to support alternative transportation options.

Construction began in early 2018 and is anticipated to be complete by the end of this year.

What are the benefits of the project?

The Nimitz & Rosecrans Roadway Improvements project will improve traffic flow in the area by providing additional dedicated turn lanes for drivers. These dedicated turn lanes remove stopped vehicles from through lanes and increase traffic safety. Studies show that dedicated turn lanes reduce collisions, improve congestion and allow for increased vehicle capacity.

In addition to improved traffic flow, the project will add bike lanes on Rosecrans, install energy efficient streetlamps, and install systems to treat storm water runoff.

Will the project impact jacarandas on Rosecrans? What about the American flags that are placed on Rosecrans on Sundays?

Any jacaranda trees that are affected by project construction will be replaced or relocated to ensure that there is no loss of these corridor-defining trees. No jacarandas that have commemorative plaques are affected by the project.

As for the American flag display on Sundays, four flag locations will be impacted during construction and will temporarily be unable to be used until construction is complete. These locations will be replaced as part of the project and will be available for flag display once construction is complete.
